At the weekend, it was Ayr Archery Club’s turn to host the Scottish Tour (Stage 3) and Scottish Outdoor Championships. The events took place at The William J.M.Mowat Playing Fields, Doonside in Ayr. The playing fields were named after local William Mowat who played a significant role in the commercial, educational, sporting and spiritual life of the town. It was a mixed weekend of weather with rain showers throughout the weekend however this did not dampen the spirits of all those involved. Both competitions on the Saturday and Sunday were World Record Status events with the Stage 3 being a WA720 round and Outdoor Championships a WA1440 round – requiring lots of endurance both physically and mentally for competitors.
It was a very competitive weekend. In the Men’s Recurve it was the narrowest of victories for Linwood Archers’ Frank Hynds who tied 5-5 with Crieff Archery Club’s Kevin Wilson. This meant it headed to a shoot off. Hynds managed to hold his nerve hitting a 7 to take the win. However, Wilson retuned on the Sunday in the WA1440 round, achieving a score of 1166 to take Gold with Hynds taking Bronze on this occasion. A resurgence from Kingdom of Fife Fletchers’ Max Gordon saw him take silver with a score of 1153.
In the Women’s Recurve category, Penicuik Archers’ Gillian Imrie and Joan Smith of neighbouring club Lasswade Archery Club faced off in the final with Imrie winning 6-4. Imrie continued this winning form into the Sunday and took the win with a score of 1138.
Balbardie Archers’ Kyle Scott took gold in the Men’s Compound on the Saturday with a 137-131 win over Loreburn Archers’ Donald Gibson. Travelling from further afield, Stewart Stanger of Orkney Archers landed Bronze on the Saturday and upped his game even further on the Sunday displaying an impressive performance winning gold with a score of 1326.
For Women’s Compound categories, it was a straight final between Loreburn Archers’ Hannah Maison and Ayr Archery Club’s Maree Shields with Maison clinching the win 132-122 adding two golds to her collection rounding off a successful weekend for Maison.
In the Barebow categories, a convincing set of performances from Linwood Archers’ Joshua McMillan seen him take two golds in the men’s category with a score of 798 on the Sunday. It was same accomplishment for Marion Johnston of Ayr Archery Club securing the win in the final of the women’s category in the WA720 and WA1440. Sandie Graham and Mike Nilsson competed in the Longbow categories on the Sunday.
“These events are only made possible by the knowledge, hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A huge well done to Ayr Archery Club for hosting another excellent weekend of archery competition, especially Fiona Acamovic for her first as tournament organiser. Well done to all those who took part” Lyndsay Morrison, Scottish Archery's CEO
