The Bannockburn Bowmen Open Double and Singles Portsmouth kicked off the competition calendar in Scotland for 2025, taking place on 11th January.  The venue was Lornshill Academy Sports Complex, Alloa in Clackmannashire.Â
The event was a Scottish Record Status (SRS) event registered with Scottish Archery as a national competition. Trophies were awarded to top scoring male and female archer in each bowstyle. Handicap medals given to top three adjusted scores across the board.
Terry Dakin of Penicuik Archers took Gold in the Longbow Gents Master category closely followed by Lethen Archers’ Steven Coull & Tweeddale Archers’ John Nicholson. Lasswade Archery Club’s Joan Smith topped the table in the Recurve Women’s Master category with a total of 48, 10’s to take Gold. A solid performance from Penicuik Archers’ Gillian Imrie saw her take Gold in the Recurve Women’s Senior category.
Within the Barebow categories, there were impressive performances from both Katherine Lamont (on home turf) in the Barebow Women’s U21 and Carin Bergdahl in the Barebow Women’s Master categories respectively.
In the Compound section, East Kilbride’s James Ross put in an impressive performance with a total score of 1103, with Bannockburn’s Rogan Thomas and Inverclyde’s John-Malkin Gill not far behind. Gill’s fellow club member and compounder Richard Lindsay competed in Men’s Masters category.
It was highly competitive contest between the Recurve archers, with Kevin Wilson of Crieff Archery Club leading the Gents Master category with the highest single score of the day with 579. Balbardie’s Frank Hynds had a tally of 81, 10’s and double Portsmouth score of 1156 taking gold in the Gents Senior category.
It was also pleasing to see some great performances from the young archers competing across U21, U18 and U16 groups - well done everyone!
Tournament Organiser, Judith Forbes of Bannockburn Bowmen reflected on the event:
‘‘There was a good turnout for Bannockburn’s first competition of 2025, with 49 archers shooting the single Portsmouth and 30 completing the double round across all bowstyles. Our thanks to everyone involved, and congratulations to all the medal and trophy winners’’.
Big thank you to the tournament organiser Judith, volunteers, judges Simon Garforth and Frank Schallmoser and to Bannockburn Bowmen for hosting.
