Derek Sangster

DEREK SANGSTER

There is hardly a corner of our sport that Derek has not been involved in at some level as since taking up archery in 1977.  Since then he has been a club founder, a coach and a judge - mentoring and training many to follow in his footsteps - and also served in governance roles with Archery GB and Scottish Archery - even coming out of retirement to support the new Scottish Archery board in 2013.

Derek's experience and knowledge made him ideal person to play a key organisational role in the lead up to the Archery World Cup finals in Edinburgh in 2010 - liaising with World Archery, Archery GB, Edinburgh City Council and Scottish Archery.

Derek’s fairness, impartiality, commitment, knowledge, good manners and dedication have been inspirational to all who followed him and so, more than 35 years after he first started archery , Derek is truly deserving of 1st place in the Scottish Archery Hall of Fame. Read the full story.

JOHN MURRAY

Prior to acquiring his disability, John was an active sportsman who became inspired by what he saw during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 1992 where an amputee archer shot an arrow that lit the Olympic/Paralympic flame.

Introduced to the sport in 1994 using a recurve bow, John changed to the compound bow in 1998 and quickly established his reputation being one of a few to have their first international experience at a Paralympic Games - in John's case in Atlantic in 1996.

In 2000 he won a gold medal at the World Championships in New Zealand. Two years later, in 2002, he was a member of the GB gold medal winning team at the European Championships in Poland; following that up with a GB team silver at the World Championships in Madrid in 2003. In 2005 he repeated his performance of 2002 with a gold medal at the World team event in Italy.

John has been the top disabled archer with a compound bow in Great Britain since 1998 with a 1440 score of 1364. Though one of the quiet men of disability sport there is no doubt that he is a true champion overcoming long periods of illness and excessive pain to be an outstanding world champion and a great credit to Scotland and Great Britain.
