Golfers add a string to their Bows for Prostate Cancer

Inspired by this month's Rio Olympics, the European Senior Golf Tour teamed up with Scottish Archery ahead of this week's Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, giving members Paul Broadhurst, David J Russell and Andrew Oldcorn a new challenge on the golf course.

The first recorded occupants on the site where Archerfield Links stands today were the bowmen of King Edward I in 1298, giving the location the name Archerfield.

Used to being competitors out on the course, defending Scottish Senior Open champion Paul Broadhurst, DJ Russell, designer of both golf courses at Archerfield, and Scotsman Andrew Oldcorn, winner of the WINSTON golf Senior Open earlier this year, were paired up with archers from Scottish Archery, each shooting six arrows in a competition before Friday's tee-off.

Former Olympian Simon Needham, who participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2010 Commonwealth Games, fellow Commonwealth Games teammate Alistair Whittingham, and Scottish 3D Field champion David Ireland were on hand to introduce the golfers to a new sport.

The 18th fairway was transformed into an archery range with the team with the most points after three ends taking first prize.

The winner of the competition will be revealed in the highlights show of the 2016 Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open.

People are unaware that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It’s a huge issue that cannot be ignored. In 2016 one man an hour will die from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 10,900 men this year. Based on current trends, if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. People are urged to search Men United and join the fight.
